The Washington, DC Chapter was chartered February 18, 2012, on the historic grounds of Howard University by 14 dynamic women motivated by hard work and determination to better the lives of the residents in the Nation’s Capital. Keeping with the focus on making a noticeable difference in the community doubled its effort toward improving sickle cell blood donations in the African American community. The chapter partnered with Children’s National Hospital to become the “Only” Not for profit organization serving as the Blood Ambassador to Children with sickle cell.
National TLOD leadership sought the chapter to serve in a pilot program the A-Team (from Teens to Men) program with the Marilee Evers Foundation. The program goal was to reduce the prison pipeline for African American young men at risk, ages 12 to provide strong male mentoring and role model to change the narrative. The Ladies proudly undertook the effort and received overwhelming support from the Lords (husbands). Twelve young men graduated from the program.
September 2012, the chapter had grown to 31 strong and committed women and helped to develop new partnerships with other organizations. The National Democratic Women’s Club and Washington DC honored 4 outstanding Trail Blazers, Ambassador Carol Mosley Braun, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and The Reverend Brenda Girton Mitchell of Metropolitan Baptist Church/ National Council of Negro Women whose leadership and forward thinking made a difference in their respective communities.
